Gardening is Good for You (and your health!): National Public Health Week Event in the Garden!

Good Monday Morning!

The Gamma Zeta Chapter is going to be co-sponsoring an event in the Public Health Garden during National Public Health Week.

Come join us to learn about the connections between gardening and public health, and to get active in the garden! This event is part of National Public Health Week and co-sponsored by the Public Health Garden, Delta Omega (the Public Health Honor Society), and the Maryland Council on Family Relations (MCFR). From 3:30-4:00 pm we'll hear from two Ph.D. students about their work related to the public health-gardening nexus. Then from 4:00-5:30 pm, everyone is invited to get their hands dirty in the garden helping plant, harvest, and assist with other garden tasks at hand. Join the spirit of this year's National Public Health Week theme "A Healthier America Begins Today!" and start healthy living and eating with the Public Health Garden!

Date: Monday, April 2, 2012

Time: 3:30-5:30pm

Location: Public Health Garden (between Eppley Recreation Center and the School of Public Health)

Sponsored by: Public Health Garden, Delta Omega Gamma Zeta Chapter, and the Maryland Council on Family Relations (MCFR)

It would be great to see a big Gamma Zeta Chapter showing at this event!

Volunteers Needed for Feb. 15 Public Health Grand Rounds!

Happy Thursday to you! The Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Omega is co-sponsoring the February 15 Public Health Grand Rounds featuring APHA Executive Director Dr. Georges Benjamin. By being co-sponsors, instead of providing financial support, we are providing volunteer support. We still need volunteers for one hour shifts to help represent Delta Omega during this event.

Volunteers are needed for the following times and tasks. Each volunteer slot is for one hour only, unless you choose to stay longer.

1:15-2:15pm directing from SPH to Eppley Rec Center (1 volunteer)

1:30-2:30pm check in at entry table/food set up (1 volunteer still needed)

2:30-3:30pm check in at entry table/clean-up (2 volunteers)

3:30-4:30pm check in/clean-up (2 volunteers)

Please email me with the specific time and task you can help with.

Thank you!!

Come see our new bulletin board!

I hope everyone had a good holiday season and happy new year and is feeling refreshed for what I am sure will prove to be an exciting year in the Gamma Zeta Chapter of Delta Omega!

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to Meghan Cohen for her expert help on putting up our new Delta Omega Gamma Zeta Chapter bulletin board in the main lobby of the SPH building! Our bulletin board is located directly next to the student lounge.

I have put up three sections: 1) Delta Omega sponsored events; 2) Delta Omega members at UMD; and 3) About Delta Omega.

Posted under "Delta Omega sponsored events" is a flyer for the Feb. 15 Public Health Grand Rounds featuring Dr. Georges Benjamin. Please email me at deltaomegaumd@gmail.com about helping to staff this event which the Gamma Zeta chapter is co-sponsoring. It is through volunteer and service events like this that you truly exhibit the spirit of Delta Omega, an honor society that emphasizes dedication to the public health field.

Look for an email from Doodle about scheduling the first meeting of the semester soon!
